The Dictionary Of Art & Beauty in The Quran & Hadith
Many brilliant artistic pieces have been produced at the heart of the Islamic heritage all throughout the ages, and their importance was discovered basically in the recent century thanks to the Western and Muslim scholars’ studies in the field. The Hadith sources, however, enjoyed lesser attention. By deriving some topics in regards to art and beauty from the Quranic verses and Hadith sources, the present research seeks to contribute to the studies done in this field in two respects: first to elucidate what the position of the Islamic sources in regard to arts and beauty is. And second, to use these sources like a mirror to reflect the state of art and beauty in the early years of Islam, with the purpose of helping the researchers in the field. This project has been launched in 2013 and the first phase of it is dedicated to the Qur’an and the Shiite Hadith sources (128 books). It is an interdisciplinary project and is seeking to make dialogue in the Islamic studies possible; between the Hadith and Quranic studies and the topics regarding the history of the development of the Arabic vocabulary, in the light of the latest studies and investigations in arts and aesthetics. This project tries to organize and classify the Quranic verses and the Hadiths in a way that would best serve the interests and purposes of the contemporary artists and the researchers in the field so that they could be able to easily use them in the context of their art and researches.
In the second phase, however, the Sunnite Hadith sources and the major part of the written Islamic heritage up to the end of the fourth century will be investigated so that in the end a comprehensive body of information including all the relevant topics could be provided.
School of Quranic Dramaturgy, which will deal with the question of the possibility and methods of adapting the holy text into stories and screenplays, has been active since 2016 and has organized and hosted more than 50 academic discussions on the issue, each with the presence of experts and scholars on the subject from Iran and around the world.
The Islamic School of Art started research in the field of “religious jurisprudence of art” by building a research team in 2009, and undertook this endeavor along with its main activities. The results of these studies through six years have been presented in the form of an Ijtihad-level religious jurisprudence lesson at Faiziah School.
The two books derived from these lessons in ijtihad “Religious Jurisprudence of sculpture and image” and “Religious jurisprudence of music and enrapturing music”, as well as the book “Dialogue on religious jurisprudence of art” are among the published works of this collection which based on normative deductions has a critical approach to the famous fatwas as well as problem-solving resolutions to art.
The publication of these three books as a prelude prepared the ground for more interchange, until the scientific council of Conference on Religious Jurisprudence of Art, chaired by Ayatollah Alidust was formed on May 2015, which has so far led two important and influential conferences biennially (on January 2016 and January 2018) and is scheduled to host the third conference on January 2020.
